The library garden was designed by Rémi Duthoit and built with the residents of Volx. Wagon Landscaping supported Rémi Duthoit on issues relating to depaving, as well as during the construction and planting works.
The former school in Volx has been converted into the municipal library, becoming a place for everyday life, encounters and exchange within the village. The schoolyard, previously mineral and enclosed, has been transformed into a garden. Conceived as a direct extension of the library, it accommodates readings, cultural events and everyday uses open to all.
Starting from a courtyard entirely covered in asphalt, the intervention sought to restore the permeability of the ground. Removing the impermeable surface reduces the heat accumulated by dark materials and improves thermal comfort. The ground has been opened up and planted, while the circulation routes have been redrawn in a simple way, leaving generous open spaces able to accommodate a wide range of changing uses. The project transforms a monotonous courtyard into a shared garden that is clear, welcoming and easy for the local community to appropriate.
Designed for simple and sustainable management, the garden nevertheless offers a rich variety of atmospheres throughout the seasons. Flowers, fruit and changing colours accompany its uses all year round, making the garden a living space: both a setting for cultural activities and a place to pause and breathe at the heart of the village.
